Counting Cubes

This is a matching exercise.

Several groups of [cubes]* are placed across the table. A [range] of Usk Grid cards is available in [random] order.

Selection of Usk 'rid Cards' and cubes in corresponding groups
"Choose and place a number card against the appropriate pile of cubes!"
Usk 'Frame Cards' have been placed such that dots and nube of cubes match
Completed

The cubes have the advantage of being laid out in similar style to the layout on the cards. Two 'matchings' might be emplyed: visual layout or counting dots.

The counting will be easier for children familiar with the three-by-three layout, or those who can subitize a complete row at a glance.

Frequent exercise will familiarise all methods: and maturity will enable the 'best' technique to be lodged in memory. (Theory strongly suggests that the child discovers this, rather than is 'taught the trick'. It takes time, but is worth it.)

It requires maturity to notice that the first three piles of cubes are in a L-R sequence, the others are not. If this difficulty is foreseen: avoid it! There are many ways to make such tasks easier: fewer groups, smaller quantities...
