Patch

A very simple educational game for infants

The illustrations show the main forty card set of Usk Cards. The remaining 16 cards are in the box. I would suggest using fewer cards, especially at first: maybe 3-4-5-6 each one 'four-ways' (= 16 cards). Split the cards into two equal piles, one for each player (North and South in these pictures.)

We show two coloured 'patches'. Ours are made of artificial felt - but paper would do well. (The felt makes it easier for small fingers to pick-up the cards, or even slide them off the edge.)

The aim is to remove cards from the patches and build your own families of numerically matching cards. Suggested rule: each player only plays from his/her own patch. In theory the patches will be empty by the time the last card is drawn. Winner is: as the umpire decides!

Unused cards in the box. Equal piles for N (yellow) and S (blue). Empty patches. Space required at top and bottom of picture (not yet shown)

S turns over a card onto her patch

The first few moves are uneventful

N turns over a card onto his patch

S turns over a second card

Description of a picture
A pair of cards. The probability of a match is very small

N turns over his second card

Description of a picture
No matching yet

S now has three cards

Description of a picture
Still no match if the suggested rule is in play. There is a match on the opposing patches. Alternative rules can be invented to allow for someone to claim a match with the two 'ones'.

N turns over his third card a'6'

Description of a picture
The fall of cards is slightly frustrating. The suggested alternaitve rule might have started things moving. This picture demonstrates why the cards have a brown base-line.)

S fills the last available space on her patch

Description of a picture
At last! S has a match on her patch - a pair of 'twos'. (Chatting about this with a youngster might be introducing the word 'pair'. 'Pair' is one of the extra cards, currently in the box.)

The matching pairs are claimed by S as 'hers'

Description of a picture
The game starts in earnest

S has another turn: a reward for completing a match

Description of a picture
Oh! A 'seven dot' to match the '7'. Claim that one also.

S is clearly on a winning streak: and has another turn. (Maybe the 'extra turn' rules needs modification?)
