In our system we have words and symbols for simple counting numbers up to nine: one, two, three...,and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. Beyond that we introduce another word and symbol – zero, 0.
We have adopted a clever writing technique – using only these ten symbols – that enables us to continue counting up to any huge number of 'things'.
The technical term for the ten symbols is digits. (We have ten fingers. It is probably no coincidence that they are also known as digits.)
Since the digits are so useful in mathematics it is important to be thoroughly familiar with all aspects of them at an early age.
The set of Usk Cards concentrates on the digits, representing them in a variety of ways. (Our Wye Cards set includes 'ten' and '10'. The Nene Set moves on to twelve, '12'.)
